Australia is a country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania and numerous smaller islands, positioned between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is the world's flattest and driest inhabited continent, with landscapes ranging from deserts in the interior to tropical rainforests along the coast, among them the Daintree Rainforest, and landmarks such as the sandstone monolith Uluru and the Great Barrier Reef. The six former British colonies federated into the Commonwealth of Australia on 1 January 1901, with the Australia Act 1986 ending the United Kingdom's remaining legislative authority over the country. Its capital is Canberra.
