Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness

Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness is a protected wilderness area on the border of Montana and Wyoming, in the United States. Designated by Congress in 1978, it originally covered 904,500 acres within the Custer National Forest and the Gallatin National Forest and has since grown to 937,102 acres. It spans two geologically distinct mountain ranges, the granite Beartooth Mountains and the volcanic and metamorphic Absaroka Range, and contains more than 120 peaks above 10,000 feet, including Granite Peak at 12,807 feet, the highest point in Montana. It is managed by the United States Forest Service and classified under IUCN protected area category Ib.
