Al Reem Biosphere Reserve is an inhabited protected area of about 120,000 hectares in northwest Qatar, roughly 65 kilometres from Doha, covering nearly a tenth of the land area of Qatar with semi-arid desert habitat for gazelles, Arabian oryx and other wildlife. Established in 2005 and recognized by UNESCO as a biosphere reserve in 2007, it is one of 24 UNESCO biosphere reserves in the Middle East and is valued nationally for its comparatively dense vegetation.
