Annapurna Conservation Area is Nepal's largest protected area, covering roughly 7,629 square kilometres across five districts in the Annapurna range of the Himalayas, from valley floor at about 790 metres up to the 8,091-metre summit of Annapurna I. Unlike a strict national park, it is managed under a community-based conservation model that allows the Gurung, Manangi and other local peoples who have long lived within its boundaries to continue farming, herding and hosting trekkers rather than being excluded from the land. The area is best known internationally for the trekking routes that cross it, including the Annapurna Circuit, one of the most popular long-distance treks in the Himalayas.
