Arabuko-Sokoke National Park protects a 6 square kilometer core of the much larger 420 square kilometer Arabuko-Sokoke Forest Reserve on Kenya's coast, about 110 kilometers north of Mombasa near Malindi, gazetted as a national park in 1990. The forest holds exceptional endemism, including Clarke's weaver and the Sokoke scops owl among its birds and the golden-rumped elephant shrew and Aders's duiker among its mammals, the latter shared only with Zanzibar. Three distinct forest types, mixed forest, Brachystegia and Cynometra, each support different plant and animal communities, and the adjoining Mida Creek mangrove forest is an important wintering ground for shorebirds such as the Terek sandpiper and crab plover.
