Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge protects 57,331 acres of Rio Grande wetland and desert habitat in Socorro County, southern New Mexico, near the town of San Antonio. Founded in 1939 and administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, it has become a premier site for observing sandhill cranes during their fall and winter residency and stays open to visitors year round, offering hiking, cycling and a 12-mile scenic auto route along with educational programming. Its Spanish name translates as woodland of the Apache, recalling the Apache groups who once camped in the Rio Grande forests there. The refuge drew about 160,000 visitors in 2006.
