Central Kalahari Game Reserve is an extensive game reserve within the Kalahari Desert of Botswana, established in 1961 and covering roughly 52,800 square kilometres, making it the second largest game reserve in the world by area. It occupies more than forty percent of Botswana's Ghanzi District and protects a semi-arid landscape of grassland, fossil river valleys and scattered acacia scrub, home to species including lion, cheetah, gemsbok and brown hyena adapted to the desert's scarce water. The reserve is also long associated with the San (Bushmen) and Bakgalagadi peoples, whose historical presence within its boundaries has been the subject of extended legal and political dispute over residency rights.
