Denali National Park and Preserve is a United States national park and preserve in Interior Alaska, centered on Denali, the highest mountain in North America. Established as Mount McKinley National Park on February 26, 1917, it was renamed and substantially expanded in 1980 under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, which also added an adjoining national preserve where sport hunting is allowed under state regulation, unlike the strictly protected park core. The park protects a largely undisturbed subarctic ecosystem of tundra, taiga forest and glaciated peaks, home to grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep and wolves.
