The Entlebuch Biosphere is a UNESCO biosphere reserve of about 395 square kilometres in the Swiss canton of Lucerne, designated in September 2001 as Switzerland's first biosphere reserve under UNESCO's updated criteria requiring both ecological conservation and sustainable human development. Nearly a third of the reserve is protected moorland, and the mountainous karst region of Schrattenfluh lies within its core zone. Its roots trace to the 1987 Rothenthurm Initiative protecting Swiss moorland landscapes, and the reserve is organized into a core zone of protected moorland, a buffer zone of alpine pasture, and a transition zone of sustainable activity in the inhabited valley floor.
