Komodo National Park

National Park

Komodo National Park is a national park in Indonesia within the Lesser Sunda Islands, spanning the border region between the provinces of East Nusa Tenggara and West Nusa Tenggara, established in 1980. It was originally created to protect the Komodo dragon, the world's largest living lizard species, found nowhere else on Earth, and its protection has since broadened to cover the park's marine environment as well, including some of the richest coral reef ecosystems in the Coral Triangle. It is administered by Indonesia's Ministry of Environment and Forestry and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. FAQs

Which islands make up Komodo National Park and how large do the dragons grow?

The park has three major islands, Rinca, Komodo and Padar, and its dragons average 2 to 3 meters long.

UNESCO describes the park as composed of three major islands, Rinca, Komodo and Padar, and numerous smaller ones, all of volcanic origin. Its best known inhabitant, the Komodo dragon, is the largest living species of lizard and grows to an average length of 2 to 3 meters. UNESCO adds that the species is the last representative of a relic population of large lizards that once lived across Indonesia and Australia.
