Gates of the Arctic Wilderness

Gates of the Arctic Wilderness is the designated wilderness area within Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve in northern Alaska, the northernmost national park in the United States, lying entirely above the Arctic Circle in the Central Brooks Range. Established under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act of 1980, it covers roughly seven million acres, making it one of the largest wilderness areas in the United States, exceeded in size by only a small number of others. The area has no roads or maintained trails, and it protects a largely untouched subarctic mountain landscape used for subsistence hunting and traditional activities by nearby Indigenous communities.
