The German Green Belt is a nature conservation corridor created from the roughly 870 mile network of fences and guard towers that once separated East and West Germany along the inner German border. Begun in 1989 as a project of the environmental group Bund fur Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland, it turned the former Death Strip into one of the world's more unusual connected nature reserves, converting a monument to division into a corridor of renewal.
