Yoho National Park

National Park

Yoho National Park lies in southeastern British Columbia, Canada, along the western slope of the Continental Divide in the Rocky Mountains. Established on October 10, 1886, it covers about 1,313 square kilometers of ice fields and mountain peaks that rank among the highest in the Canadian Rockies, and forms part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site designated in 1984. Yoho gained particular scientific importance in 1909 with the discovery of the Burgess Shale fossil deposit, a find that reshaped understanding of the early evolution of multicellular life.

FAQs

Why is the Burgess Shale fossil site important to science?

It is one of the most significant fossil areas in the world and records early animal life from about 540 million years ago.

UNESCO describes the Burgess Shale as one of the most significant fossil areas in the world. Its exquisitely preserved fossils record a diverse, abundant marine community dominated by soft-bodied organisms, dating from soon after the rapid unfolding of animal life about 540 million years ago. They provide key evidence of the history and early evolution of most animal groups known today, and give a more complete view of life in the sea than any other site for that time period. The site lies within Yoho National Park and is part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks World Heritage Site.
