Great Bear Rainforest

The Great Bear Rainforest is a large conservation area along the central and north coast of British Columbia, Canada, encompassing one of the largest intact temperate rainforests remaining on Earth. Following decades of conflict between logging interests, environmental groups and First Nations, a set of land-use agreements reached in 2006 and finalized in 2016 placed most of the region's forest off-limits to industrial logging, with the remainder subject to ecosystem-based management negotiated jointly with the region's First Nations governments. The area takes its name from the Kermode bear, a rare white-coated subspecies of black bear found there, and it also supports grizzly bear, wolf and salmon populations central to the region's ecology and to First Nations culture.
