The Island of Principe Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO biosphere reserve established in 2012 covering the entire emerged area of Principe, in Sao Tome and Principe in the Gulf of Guinea off West Africa, together with several smaller islands and their surrounding marine waters. Spanning about 71,593 hectares divided into core, buffer and transition zones on land and at sea, it is managed by the regional government of Principe and protects primary tropical forest with high rates of endemism among plants, molluscs, insects, birds, reptiles and bats, as well as habitat for sea turtles, seabirds and cetaceans.
