Wood Buffalo National Park is the largest national park in Canada, covering 44,741 square kilometres across northeastern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories, an area larger than Switzerland and the second largest national park in the world. Established in 1922 to protect the world's largest herd of free-roaming wood bison, the park's bison population became hybridized after plains bison were later introduced alongside them, and today numbers roughly 3,000 animals. The park is also one of only two known nesting sites anywhere for the whooping crane, one of the rarest crane species on Earth.

Why is Wood Buffalo National Park on the World Heritage List?
Its wild bison, its whooping crane nesting ground and a very large inland delta.
UNESCO describes the park as home to North America's largest population of wild bison and as the natural nesting place of the whooping crane. It also names the park's world's largest inland delta, at the mouth of the Peace and Athabasca rivers, as another of its attractions. Those three features, the bison, the cranes and the delta, are what the World Heritage listing highlights.
