Wood Buffalo National Park is the largest national park in Canada, covering 44,741 square kilometres across northeastern Alberta and the southern Northwest Territories, an area larger than Switzerland and the second largest national park in the world. Established in 1922 to protect the world's largest herd of free-roaming wood bison, the park's bison population became hybridized after plains bison were later introduced alongside them, and today numbers roughly 3,000 animals. The park is also one of only two known nesting sites anywhere for the whooping crane, one of the rarest crane species on Earth.
