Tongariro National Park is a national park in the central North Island of New Zealand, gifted to the nation by Ngati Tuwharetoa chief Horonuku Te Heuheu Tukino IV in 1887 and formally established in 1894, making it New Zealand's first national park and one of the earliest in the world created through indigenous donation rather than government appropriation. The park protects an active volcanic landscape centered on Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under natural criteria and later again under cultural criteria, recognizing both its geology and its profound spiritual significance to Maori. It is administered by New Zealand's Department of Conservation.

Why is Tongariro National Park recognized for its culture as well as its volcanoes?
In 1993 UNESCO added a cultural landscape listing because the mountains are sacred to the Maori people.
UNESCO records Tongariro as inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1990. It says that in 1993 the park became the first property inscribed under the revised criteria describing cultural landscapes. The reason given is that the mountains at the heart of the park have cultural and religious significance for the Maori people and symbolize the spiritual links between this community and its environment.
