Tongariro National Park is a national park in the central North Island of New Zealand, gifted to the nation by Ngati Tuwharetoa chief Horonuku Te Heuheu Tukino IV in 1887 and formally established in 1894, making it New Zealand's first national park and one of the earliest in the world created through indigenous donation rather than government appropriation. The park protects an active volcanic landscape centered on Mount Ruapehu, Mount Ngauruhoe and Mount Tongariro, and it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under natural criteria and later again under cultural criteria, recognizing both its geology and its profound spiritual significance to Maori. It is administered by New Zealand's Department of Conservation.
