Kawésqar National Park, formerly the Alacalufes National Reserve, protects a vast archipelago of low mountainous islands, fjords and channels between the Pacific Ocean and the Strait of Magellan in the Magallanes Region of Chile, established July 22, 1969 and covering about 7,023,542 acres, making it the second largest national park in Chile. Its Magellanic rainforest and high rainfall of up to 2,450 millimeters a year support about 24 mammal species, and the park honors the Kawesqar people, nomadic hunter gatherers who have inhabited the region for about seven thousand years.
