The Kota Kinabalu Wetland Centre protects 24 hectares of mangrove forest, the last remnant of mangroves that once lined this stretch of coast in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. Established in 1986 after the Sabah Wetlands Inventory Committee selected it from twenty candidate sites, it was previously known as Likas Swamp or the Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary and functions today as both a bird sanctuary and a breeding ground for marine life under protection from the Fishery Department of Sabah. It was designated a Ramsar wetland on October 22, 2016, and its mangroves also stabilize sediment, store nutrients and filter pollutants for the surrounding area.
