Matsalu National Park, previously known as Matsalu Nature Reserve, lies in the Laane and Parnu counties of Estonia and spans about 486.1 square kilometers, comprising Matsalu Bay, the delta of the Kasari River and the village of Matsalu and its surroundings. Matsalu Bay is one of the most important wetland bird areas in Europe because of its position on the East Atlantic Flyway, with more than two million waterfowl, around 1.6 million of them long tailed ducks, passing through every spring. The park is also home to a number of endangered species on the Estonian IUCN Red List, including the white tailed eagle, along with numerous protected bird species, 22 strongly protected plant species and the natterjack toad.
