The Mukura Forest Reserve is a protected reserve of about 16 square kilometres in northwest Rwanda's Albertine Rift region, on the Congo-Nile crest, and once formed part of a continuous mountain forest stretching from Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park before becoming an isolated forest fragment. Designated a reserve in 1951 at an original size of 30,000 hectares, it has lost nearly half its forest cover and biodiversity to exploitation by a dense surrounding population with a mean household income of about three dollars a month. Rising to an average elevation of 2,600 metres and receiving about 1,500 millimetres of rainfall annually, the forest supports around 163 recorded bird species.
