Nata Bird Sanctuary is a community-managed wildlife reserve in northeastern Botswana, at the mouth of the Nata River delta on the edge of the Sua Pan in the Makgadikgadi region, covering about 230 square kilometres of which nearly half lies within the salt pan itself. Founded in 1988 and opened to the public in 1993, it is managed by the Kalahari Conservation Society with residents of the villages of Nata, Sepako, Maposa and Manxotae, who voluntarily relocated their cattle to allow the sanctuary to be established. It won the Tourism for Tomorrow award for the Southern Hemisphere in 1993 and is recognized by UNESCO as one of the largest breeding sites for lesser and greater flamingos in the world, hosting roughly 250,000 birds each winter.
