Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected area and UNESCO World Heritage Site in Ngorongoro District, Arusha Region, Tanzania, established in 1959 when it was separated administratively from the adjoining Serengeti National Park. Unlike a strict national park, it is managed under a multiple land-use model that permits the Maasai people to graze livestock within its boundaries alongside dense populations of wildlife, centered on the Ngorongoro Crater, the world's largest intact, unfilled volcanic caldera. It is administered by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (mixed cultural and natural) in 1979, having briefly appeared on the List of World Heritage in Danger from 1984 to 1989.
