The Palau National Marine Sanctuary is a marine protected area established in Palau in 2015, covering about 502,539 square kilometres, making it one of the largest protected areas in the world. All extractive activities, including commercial fishing and mining, are prohibited across 80 percent of the sanctuary, while domestic fisheries are permitted in the remaining 20 percent, and it has been cited at the United Nations Ocean Conference as one of the world's most ambitious ocean conservation initiatives.
