Rhon Biosphere Reserve protects the central Rhon Mountains, a low mountain range spanning three German states, Hesse, Bavaria and Thuringia. UNESCO recognized the reserve on March 6, 1991. It totals 184,939 hectares, split among Bavaria at 72,802 hectares, Hesse at 63,564 hectares and Thuringia at 48,573 hectares, and is zoned into core areas covering 2.27 percent of the reserve, buffer zones covering 36.49 percent, and cooperation zones making up the remainder. Since November 2002 the three states have coordinated management through an inter-state administrative agreement, with the stated aim of balancing local agriculture, nature protection, tourism and trade to maintain the variety and quality of habitats across the Rhon region through sustainable development.
