Saiwa Swamp National Park lies near Kitale in Trans-Nzoia County in Kenya's Rift Valley region, established in 1974 and covering only about 3 square kilometers, making it the smallest national park in the country. It was created specifically to protect the sitatunga antelope, a swamp specialist whose elongated, splayed hooves let it move through mud but leave it vulnerable on firmer ground, and the park's wetland also supports varied trees, birds, insects and reptiles.
