The Sapodilla Cayes are an uninhabited atoll of low sandy islands in the Gulf of Honduras, forming part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System and administered by Belize, though also claimed by Guatemala and Honduras. The Sapodilla Cayes Marine Reserve, established in 1996 over the atoll, is classified IUCN Category IV and spans 15,618 hectares, jointly administered by Belize Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment together with the Southern Environmental Association. It protects the atoll reef ecosystem and supports significant bird populations, including white crowned pigeons and red footed boobies, as part of a wider Important Bird Area covering Belize offshore and barrier islands.
