Selous Game Reserve is a protected wilderness area in southern Tanzania, first given protected status in 1896 under German colonial administration and formally established as a game reserve in 1922, then named for the big-game hunter and early conservationist Frederick Selous, who died within its bounds in 1917. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 for its exceptional biodiversity across grassland and miombo woodland habitat, sheltering large populations of African bush elephant, black rhinoceros, lion, African wild dog and Nile crocodile, among many others. In 2019 the Tanzanian government upgraded roughly two-thirds of the reserve's former area to national park status under the name Nyerere National Park, with the remaining portion continuing to carry the Selous Game Reserve name.
