The Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness is a congressionally designated wilderness area spanning the states of Idaho and Montana in the northwestern United States, protecting roughly 1.3 million acres of the Bitterroot Mountains and the Selway River drainage. It is one of the largest designated wilderness areas in the country and, together with several adjoining wilderness units, forms part of one of the largest roadless wildland complexes in the contiguous United States. The area protects steep, densely forested river canyons and high alpine terrain that support populations of elk, mountain goat and gray wolf.
