Takutea is a small, uninhabited sand island in the Cook Islands, about 21 kilometres northwest of Atiu, roughly one mile long and three-quarters of a mile wide with a maximum elevation of 20 feet. It is administratively part of Atiu and owned collectively by the residents of Atiu rather than by any single village, and has been managed as a wildlife sanctuary since regular visits declined after 1963. It is recognized as an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International, and trustees enforce rules barring removal of any species, including tropicbird feathers, without their approval, protecting it as a major seabird breeding ground.
