Van Mijenfjorden National Park

Van Mijenfjorden National Park in Norway's Svalbard archipelago was established by law on June 18, 2021 as an enlarged successor to the 2003 Nordenskioeld Land National Park, extending protection across the whole of Van Mijenfjorden and the northern part of Van Keulenfjord and adjoining the South Spitsbergen National Park. Its expansion was driven by the fjord's unusually stable sea ice, important for polar bears, seals and other wildlife, and the park includes three seasonal bird sanctuaries, at Miterhuken, Eholmen and Mariaholmen, closed to visitors from mid-May to mid-August, along with seasonal restrictions on motorized travel across the fjord ice.
