Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a national forest park in Zhangjiajie, Hunan province, China, covering 4,810 hectares as part of the larger Wulingyuan Scenic Area, which was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992. The park was designated Chinas first national forest park in 1982 and is known for its distinctive quartz sandstone pillar formations, shaped over time by physical erosion, ice expansion, and plant growth rather than chemical dissolution. Its scenery inspired the floating mountains of the 2009 film Avatar, and in January 2010 one prominent 1,080 meter peak, the Southern Sky Column, was officially renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain in the films honor.
