Denali National Park and Preserve

Protected Landscape and Seascape

Denali National Park and Preserve is a United States national park and preserve in Interior Alaska, centered on Denali, the highest mountain in North America. Established as Mount McKinley National Park on February 26, 1917, it was renamed and substantially expanded in 1980 under the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act, which also added an adjoining national preserve where sport hunting is allowed under state regulation, unlike the strictly protected park core. The park protects a largely undisturbed subarctic ecosystem of tundra, taiga forest and glaciated peaks, home to grizzly bears, caribou, Dall sheep and wolves. FAQs

Can visitors drive their own vehicles through Denali National Park?

Private vehicles are restricted beyond mile 15 of the 92 mile park road; the interior is reached by tour or shuttle bus.

Only part of the way. The Denali Park Road runs 92 miles (148 kilometres) from the George Parks Highway to Kantishna and is the sole vehicle access to the park. Only the first 15 miles, up to the Savage River Bridge, are paved, and private vehicles are restricted beyond that point. Access to the interior of the park is only through tour and shuttle buses.
