Acadia is the historical French colonial region and cultural area of northeastern North America, centered on the Canadian Maritime provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island and extending into parts of Quebec and the U.S. state of Maine. Settled by French colonists from the early seventeenth century, its population was forcibly deported by British authorities in the mid-eighteenth-century Expulsion of the Acadians, many of whom resettled in Louisiana as the ancestors of the Cajun people, and Acadian culture and French language survive today in pockets across the region.
