Appalachia is the cultural and geographic region of the eastern United States and easternmost Canada built around the Appalachian Mountains, stretching from the Canadian Maritimes through the northeastern and southeastern United States to northern Alabama and Georgia. Long associated with coal mining, rural poverty and a distinct musical and folk culture, the region has also become known for its biodiversity and the ecological richness of its ancient, heavily eroded mountain chain.
