Carpathian Ruthenia, also known as Transcarpathia, is a historical region at the meeting point of Central and Eastern Europe on the southern slopes of the eastern Carpathian Mountains, with most of its territory today forming the Zakarpattia Oblast of Ukraine bordering Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania. The mountainous, largely rural region is ethnically diverse, with residents identifying as Ukrainians, Rusyns, Hungarians, Romanians, Slovaks, and Poles, and its principal cities are Uzhhorod and Mukachevo.
