Coats Land is a region of Antarctica that lies westward of Queen Maud Land and forms the eastern shore of the Weddell Sea, running in a general northeast to southwest direction between 20 and 36 degrees west. Its northeastern part was discovered from the ship Scotia by William Speirs Bruce, leader of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition of 1902 to 1904. Bruce gave the land its name in honour of James Coats Junior and Major Andrew Coats, the two chief supporters of that expedition.
