Franconia is a geographical region of Germany defined by its culture and its East Franconian dialect, comprising the three Bavarian districts of Lower, Middle, and Upper Franconia along with adjoining parts of Thuringia, Baden-Wurttemberg, and Hesse. Home to around 5 million people and anchored by its largest city, Nuremberg, Franconia has a distinct historical identity despite never having held unified political status.
