Great Lakes region

The Great Lakes region is a binational area centered on the Great Lakes, encompassing eight U.S. states, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, and the Canadian province of Ontario, forming a distinctive shared historical, economic, and cultural identity that overlaps parts of the Upper Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. Indigenous peoples have lived in the region since time immemorial, and European settlement disrupted their relationships with local ecosystems through removal from lands, industrialization, and environmental degradation, though indigenous groups continue to practice self-determination, including conservation projects such as Anishinaabe led lake sturgeon restoration. The Great Lakes themselves form the world's largest freshwater system, but the region faces significant environmental challenges from agricultural runoff, sewage disposal, and industrial contamination, with water quality crises in Toledo and Flint in the 2010s disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities.
