Lapland is the northernmost region of Europe, stretching across the Arctic and subarctic portions of Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia's Kola Peninsula. It is the traditional homeland of the Sami people, an indigenous group whose culture has long centered on reindeer herding across the region's tundra and boreal forest. Long winters, the midnight sun of summer and displays of the aurora borealis have also made Lapland one of Europe's most distinctive tourist destinations.
