Queen Maud Land is a region of East Antarctica of roughly 2.7 million square kilometres, about one fifth of the continent, and it is claimed by Norway as a dependent territory. On the west it borders Coats Land, and on the east it borders Enderby Land within the Australian Antarctic Territory. The Norwegian Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen was the first person known to have set foot there, in 1930, and Norway made its claim on 14 January 1939. The land is named after Queen Maud of Norway. Since 1961 it has been part of the Antarctic Treaty System, which makes it a demilitarised zone, and most of it lies under the east Antarctic ice sheet.
