Ross Dependency

Polar and Circumpolar Regions

The Ross Dependency is a region of Antarctica defined as a sector that starts at the South Pole and runs along longitudes 160 degrees east to 150 degrees west, ending at 60 degrees south. It is claimed by New Zealand, a claim accepted only by Australia, the United Kingdom, France and Norway, and under the 1961 Antarctic Treaty all territorial claims are held in abeyance. It takes its name from Sir James Clark Ross, who discovered the Ross Sea, and it includes part of Victoria Land and most of the Ross Ice Shelf. Ross, Balleny, Scott and Roosevelt Islands are also part of the Dependency.
