The Karoo is a semidesert natural region of South Africa, defined by low rainfall, arid air, cloudless skies, and extremes of heat and cold, with annual precipitation on its plains ranging from about 50 to 250 millimeters. It is divided by mountain ranges into the Great Karoo in the north and the smaller Klein Karoo in the south, and its rocks, the Karoo Supergroup, preserve an exceptional fossil record from roughly 270 to 200 million years ago, when the region was part of the southern supercontinent Pangaea. Although early accounts described it as a forbidding barrier, the modern Karoo supports permanent settlement and sheep farming, made possible by borehole access to underground water, and its vegetation is dominated by plants adapted to arid conditions.
