Silesia is the historical region of east-central Europe along the upper Oder River, divided today mostly between southwestern Poland and the northeastern Czech Republic, with a small portion in eastern Germany. Rich in coal and other minerals, it became one of continental Europe's earliest and most important centers of heavy industry and mining, a legacy that fueled repeated conflict over its control, from the eighteenth-century Silesian Wars between Prussia and Austria to its post-1945 transfer from Germany to Poland and the accompanying expulsion of most of its German population.
