The Southern Cone is the southernmost region of South America, comprising Argentina, Chile, Uruguay and Paraguay, and sometimes the southern Brazilian states. Its name reflects the tapering, cone-like shape of the continent below the Tropic of Capricorn. The region shares a broadly temperate climate, a colonial Spanish and Portuguese heritage, and deep economic and political integration through bodies such as Mercosur, distinguishing it from the tropical and Andean regions further north.
