The Eurasian Steppe is the vast belt of temperate grassland stretching roughly five thousand miles from Hungary and Ukraine in the west, across southern Russia and Kazakhstan, to Mongolia and Manchuria in the east. For millennia it served as a corridor for nomadic pastoralist peoples, from the Scythians and Huns to the Mongol Empire, whose mobility across its open terrain shaped the history of the civilizations on its margins. It is the specific named historical-geographic belt, distinct from the generic landform classification steppe.
