The Gran Chaco is a vast, sparsely populated lowland plain of subtropical dry forest and savanna spanning northern Argentina, western Paraguay, southeastern Bolivia and a small part of Brazil. One of South America's largest remaining dry-forest ecosystems, it is home to numerous indigenous peoples and has become a global hotspot of deforestation as agricultural expansion converts its woodland to cropland and pasture.
