The Great Lakes Region is the cultural and economic area of the north-central United States and south-central Canada surrounding the five Great Lakes: Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario. Historically the industrial heartland of both countries, built on steel, automobile manufacturing and lake shipping, it spans parts of eight U.S. states and the Canadian province of Ontario. The region is distinct from the lakes themselves, which the atlas holds as their own body-of-water entity.
